Abstract

Humanity's understanding of history is deeply rooted in the study of the past, and museums serve as one of the most vital institutions in preserving that legacy. Museum Terbuka Megalitikum Bondowoso holds a significant collection of prehistoric relics, including sarcophagi, menhirs, dolmens, and kenong stones, that reflect the spiritual and cultural complexity of early megalithic societies. However, the museum's existing catalogue, "Katalog Koleksi Museum Terbuka Megalitikum Bondowoso," was published exclusively in Indonesian, creating a language barrier that prevented international visitors, researchers, and academic institutions from accessing its content. To support the translation process, this project draws upon established theoretical foundations in translation studies. A catalogue of the collection functions as both a descriptive and analytical document, combining factual artifact information with interpretive content that serves academic and educational purposes. Translation, as defined by scholars such as Catford (1965) and Hatim and Mason (1990), is not merely a word-for-word replacement but a complex process of transferring meaning across languages while accounting for cultural and contextual differences. To navigate these complexities, this project adopted the translation model by Nida and Taber (1982), which structures the process into three phases: analysis, transfer, and restructuring. Additionally, to support the restructuring phase specifically, translation techniques based on Molina and Albir (2002) were applied to resolve linguistic and cultural gaps between Indonesian and English. The translation was conducted over approximately six months, from February to June 2026, utilizing tools including SDL Trados for terminological consistency, KBBI and Oxford Learner's Dictionary for lexical accuracy, and DeepL alongside Grammarly as secondary revision tools. The three-phase model was implemented systematically alongside the techniques of adjustment: in the analysis stage, technical terms such as "sarkofagus," "menhir," and "periuk" were identified and cross-referenced with archaeological journals. In the transfer stage, the meaning of the source text was internalized without engaging in any direct translation activity. Finally, in the restructuring stage, Machine Translation outputs served only as a starting reference, which the writer then revised using appropriate translation techniques to ensure the final result was accurate, natural, and suitable for a professional museum catalogue. Quality assurance was ensured through self-assessment, AI-assisted grammar checking, and proofreading. The final product of this project is an English-language translation of the catalogue of Museum Terbuka Megalitikum Bondowoso's collection. Designed to preserve the visual documentation and systematic structure of the original Indonesian catalogue, the translated version presents detailed archaeological and historical narratives for each artifact in a format that is both accessible and professionally appropriate for international audiences. The e-catalogue is intended to be available on both the museum's website and on-site, ensuring easy and portable access for international visitors, students, and researchers. By providing a bilingual institutional reference, this product directly supports the museum's role as a center for prehistoric education while significantly improving its international accessibility.
