Abstract

Biodiesel production thru the transesterification process results in crude biodiesel that still contains various impurities, such as residual catalysts, soap, glycerol, methanol, and water. The purification process using the dry washing method with natural zeolite adsorbent is one of the more environmentally friendly alternatives compared to the wet washing method because it can reduce water usage and generate less waste. This study aims to determine the effect of washing temperature, washing time, and zeolite mass on biodiesel yield and to identify the optimum washing process conditions using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) The research was conducted using a Box-Behnken Design with three factors, namely washing temperature (40, 50, and 60°C), washing time (20, 40, and 60 minutes), and zeolite mass (2, 4, and 6 grams). The research data were analyzed using Design-Expert software to obtain an optimization model, and then the optimum biodiesel was characterized based on SNI 7182:2015 thru tests of viscosity, density, acid number, water content, sediment content, iodine number, and methyl ester composition using GC-MS. The research results indicate that the optimum washing process conditions were obtained at a temperature of 60°C, a washing time of 20 minutes, and a zeolite mass of 4 grams, with a biodiesel yield of 72%. ANOVA analysis results show that the effects of temperature, washing time, and zeolite mass on biodiesel yield were not statistically significant (p>0.05), although practically, the combination of these treatments produced the highest yield. The optimum biodiesel has a viscosity of 3.5 cSt, a density of 889 kg/m³, an acid number of 0.0545 mg KOH/g, a water content of 0.0133%, a sediment content of 0%, and an iodine number of 52.40 g I₂/100 g, which meet the SNI 7182:2015 requirements. GC-MS analysis shows a methyl ester content of 88.94%, indicating that the transesterification process is proceeding well, although the methyl ester content does not yet meet SNI requirements. Natural zeolite has the potential to be used as an adsorbent in the biodiesel purification process using the dry washing method
