Abstract

This final project focused on translating the information boards of collections at Museum Daerah Kabupaten Lumajang (Musdakab) from Indonesian into English. The project was conducted because all collection descriptions at the museum were only available in Indonesian, making it difficult for foreign visitors to understand the historical and cultural information displayed. Therefore, the project aimed to provide English informational texts that could help international visitors access and understand the museum collections more easily. The project applied the translation process proposed by Suryawinata and Hariyanto (2016), which consists of four steps: analysis, transfer, restructuring, and evaluation and revision. In the analysis step, the writer retyped the source texts from image format into Microsoft Word, reviewed the texts to understand their meanings and contexts, and identified cultural aspects based on Newmark’s cultural categories. In the transfer step, the writer used SDL Trados Studio, online dictionaries, and machine translation tools to assist the translation process. During the restructuring step, the writer revised awkward or unclear translations and applied several translation techniques proposed by Newmark (1988), namely literal translation, borrowing, transposition, and modulation, to make the translations more natural and understandable. In the final step, evaluation and revision were conducted through self-review and proofreading to improve grammar, word choice, sentence structure, and readability. The final product consisted of English informational texts for 56 museum collections with approximately 12,200 words, presented through QR-code-based information panels. The results showed that a systematic translation process and appropriate translation techniques produced translations that are accurate, readable, and culturally appropriate while improving museum services for foreign visitors.
