Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of soaking human hair fiber waste in a 5% KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) solution on the tensile and impact strengths of epoxy-matrix composites. Human hair waste is utilized as a reinforcing fiber due to its high keratin content and resistance to decomposition, making it a potential eco-friendly alternative material. An experimental method was employed, featuring variations in soaking time (30 and 60 minutes) and fiber weight fractions (5%, 7.5%, and 10%) using the hand lay-up technique. Tensile testing was conducted in accordance with the ASTM D638 Type I standard, while impact testing followed the ASTM D5942-96 Charpy method. The results indicate that the alkalization treatment and fiber weight fraction variations influenced the composite's mechanical properties; the highest tensile strength (48.62 N/mm²) was achieved with a 60-minute soak and a 7.5% weight fraction, whereas the highest impact strength (0.185 J/mm²) was obtained with a 30-minute soak and a 10% weight fraction. This study demonstrates that KOH treatment enhances fiber-matrix adhesion up to a certain limit, suggesting that human hair waste composites have the potential to be developed as natural fiber-based alternative materials.
