Abstract

This study, conducted from October 2024 to January 2025 at the Jember State Polytechnic Experimental Field, aimed to determine the genetic diversity and heritability of two soybean lines, GHJ-3 and GHJ-4, in order to produce new superior varieties with high productivity. The experiment consisted of four treatment levels (GHJ-3, GHJ-4, Wilis, DEGA-1) with six replications, and data were analyzed using SPSS software through an F-test, followed by the Honest Significant Difference (HSD) test at a 5% significance level for significantly different variables. The results showed that the two lines exhibited narrow genetic diversity, as the genetic variance value was smaller than twice the standard deviation of genetic variance (σ2G < 2σσ2G), indicating that each individual in the population was almost uniform and the characters consisted of individuals with the same genotype. Meanwhile, the heritability values of the two lines were classified as high (>50%) for all observed characters, suggesting that these traits are strongly genetically controlled and could be reliably inherited in future generations. These findings support the government's efforts to address the national soybean production shortfall through the development of new varieties as an alternative to import policies. Keyword: Soybean, Genetic diversity, Heritability, New variety.
