Abstract

English is known as the global language and also known as the most widely spoken language. English is also used in many fields such as business, technology, and education. That makes English is important to be learned in this modern era. In fact, Indonesia is categorized as a low English ability country. As a part of Indonesia, there are many sources of education are written in English but not all of the readers are able to understand the content of the sources. It happens in Politeknik Negeri Jember especially in Information Technology Department. Based on the preliminary study, in Information Technology Department of Politeknik Negeri Jember there is an Information System Course which use English e-book during their learning process. The lecturer said that to ease the students to understand about the material, this e-book must be translated into Indonesian version. As the student of English study program, the writer decided to solve the problem faced by students of information technology department by translating an English E-book entitled “Operating System Concepts, Ninth Edition” that used in Information System Course so the students of Information Technology Department of Politeknik Negeri Jember could understand the content of the English E-book. To translate the e-book from English to Indonesian, the writer adapted the translation process from Budianto and Fardhani. There were three translation process that the writer used, they were: study the whole text and analyze the text into parts meaning, find out the equivalence then arrange them in appropiate patterns in TL, and reread the whole new text or target text. In the first process, the writer read the whole source text and analyzed the text to get the general idea of the source text. During the second process to find out the equivalence, the writer use appropriate translation procedures from Vinay and Darbelnet. In the x last process, the writer reread and recheck her target text. Afterwards, the target text were reviewed by the supervisor and the lecturer of Information Technology Department in order to know whether the target text is understanable or not. If the result of the translation is clear enough then it can be used to support the learning process in Information Technology Department of Politeknik Negeri Jember. Furthermore, after finishing this final project, the writer have suggestions for the lecturers and the students of IT department, for the students of English Study Program, and for the lecturers of English Study Program. For the lecturers and the students of IT department, the writer suggested to use the result of this final project in the learning and teaching process. For the students of English Study Program, the writer suggested to use this report of final project as the reference when they want to take a final project in translation field. For the lecturers of English Study Program, the writer suggested the lecturers to discuss more with the student during the translation class
