Abstract
Translating a Book Entitled “Batuan Berkisah” Page 01-21, Devin Bagaskara, F31221219, 2025, 58 Pages, English Study Program, Politeknik Negeri Jember, Meiga Rahmanita, S.Pd., M.Pd. (Supervisor). Jember is a regency in East Java, Indonesia, rich in historical and cultural heritage. One of its unique cultural identities is the Pandhalungan culture, which is a blend of Javanese and Madurese influences. This culture is deeply reflected in the language, traditions, and daily lives of its people. To preserve and promote this local identity, various communities have initiated documentation and publication efforts. One of them is the Yayasan Studi Arsip Sudut Kalisat, an organisation dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Kalisat, a sub-district in Jember. One of their main works is a book titled “Batuan Berkisah”, which recounts the cultural and historical richness of Kalisat through local tales, legends, and landmarks. However, the book was originally published in Indonesian, limiting its accessibility to an international audience. The Yayasan's chairman expressed the need to translate this work into English because he wanted to preserve the history and culture of Kalisat not only locally but also on the international stage. Therefore, the writer undertook the translation of pages 01 to 21 of “Batuan Berkisah” as a final project. The aim is to bridge the cultural and linguistic gap by translating the original Indonesian text into natural, accurate, and culturally appropriate English. The translation process followed the model by Nida and Taber (1982), which consists of four stages: analysis, transfer, restructuring, evaluation and revision. To support this process, the writer employed various translation strategies from numerous expert translators, Newmark (1988) and Vinay and Darbelnet (1958), particularly for cultural terms. These strategies included literal translation, transfer, cultural equivalence, descriptive equivalence, modification, generalisation, and others. Additionally, the writer utilised tools such as DeepL Translator, Grammarly, and several dictionaries to enhanced accuracy and fluency. At the end of the project, the translated version underwent proofreading and revision processes to ensure it met academic standards and effectively conveyed the cultural essence of the original work. This translation project is expected to support the Yayasan Studi Arsip Sudut Kalisat in introducing Kalisat's cultural heritage to a global audience.
