Abstract

This research was to determine the effect of added a HHO generator to exhaust emissions and engine performance. This research uses an experimental method. The highest torque and power values are obtained in seawater solution, but are still lower than using gasoline fuel. The power obtained by seawater solutions is bigger then 0.1 HP at 3000 rpm compared those not using an HHO generator. But at 4000, 5000, 6000, and 7000 rpm the torque and power using an HHO generator are under test without using an HHO generator. With a decrease in torque of 5,5% at 5000 rpm and 6,4 % power at 7000 rpm, the remaining fuel combustion in the combustion engine produces exhaust gases which theoretically contain elements of CO, NO2, HC, C, H2, CO2, H2O and N2. Emission testing was carried out at engine idle speed, the results showed the most optimal reduction in CO emission levels, namely when using mineral water solution, the reduction obtained reached 13.1% compared to CO emissions in the absence of HHO, namely from 6.79 % vol to 5,9 % vol As for HC emission, the most optimal increase when using seawater solution, the increase obtained reached 43.8 % compared to the state without HHO, namely from 1404 ppm to 2502 ppm. A significant increase in HC emissions occurred only in mineral water solutions and sea water, while in distilled water there was no increase in exhaust gas HC emissions because distilled water was distilled water free from impurities.
