Abstract

SUMMARY Designing an English Video as Media for Teaching The Fourth Grade Students of SDN Sumbersari 2 Jember. Ervin Dwi Pangestu. F3111452; Rendi Pranata. F3111458; Nur Aini. F3111666; Nurul Aini. F3111776; Language, Communication and Tourism Department. State Polytechnic of Jember. English is an International language that is used as a mean of communication in the international relationship. Therefore, everyone should learn English and it will be better to start learn English from very beginning ages. The begining ages is started from 8 up to 12 years old. They are children in elementary school who get English materials as an local content in their school. From this reason, giving an additional media in teaching English for young learners is needed. It also helps the teacher in teaching learning English especially for elemantary school. As we know that the young learners is very difficult to learn English. Based on our observation and our interview that had been done, we knew that additional media is needed by them. So, they can learn English have fun. It was the reason why we want to make additional media to help the teacher in teach the students of SDN Sumbersari 2 Jember. We made final project entitled “Designing an English Video as Media for Teaching The Fourth Grade Students of SDN Sumbersari 2 Jember” to provide additional media in teaching English. This media can helps the teacher and the students as well. It makes the student easy to comprehend about the materials (greeting and parting, introduction, alphabets, numbers, animals, days and months, foods and drinks, and human body.). All the materials will be put in a DVD to make it simpler. In designing an English teaching video, we collected the materials from the students’ book of the fourth grade of SDN Sumbersari 2 Jember. We checked the handbook and syllabus of the fourth grade of SDN Sumbersari 2 Jember from chapter 1 to chapter 8. Then, we determined the conversation that suitable with the topic in each chapter. After we made the conversation, we shot the conversation in several places that we had decided such as garden, lobby, class, and canteen. Before we shot the conversation, we had to memorize all of conversations. We asked a help from a cameraman who was expert in taking a video. Then, we also asked a help from supervisors to check and revise the content of conversation. Besides, we also recorded the voice of expression based on the materials that used for the video. There are some expression such as the tittle of part and the explanation of some materials. To make the students more interest in learning English, we added some learning videos from internet. It is to make our video more interesting to see and understand so the learners did not feel bored. In the process of designing and editing our product, we asked the programmer that was expert in editing the video. We told him all of what we want for our video. He also tougth us the process in finishing the video. So, we knew how to edit the video. In combining the video, image, and audio for our English learning video, we used Sony Vegas Pro 9 Software. In the process of conducting this project, we faced some problems. The first is about our video. We made our video twice because the first video is not good in expression and pronounciation. There were some misspronounciation such as mouth and wrist. Besides, our expression were monotonous. It made us took the picture or scene twice to make it better. Besides, it was very difficult to look for a programmer that was expert in editing and designing the video, then we got appropriate programmer in editing our video. The last problem that make us confuse was finding the song’s instrumen that match with the listener especially for elementary school. After trying several songs we finally found it from internet and used it in our video. Besides , we directly asked the supervisor to evaluated the product and gave comment. Mrs. Nanik Mariyati gave comment about our expression and pronounciation in the video. We should be more natural in expressing the conversation and also use good pronounciation. Then, we changed the video twice. Besides, another comment from our supervisor is about the music and mistyping words. The music was very slow. It made the listener become bored. Thus, we changed the music that has been took from internet (instrumen Gundul-Gundul Pacul). Then, she gave suggestion to add the text for each part of human body. According to Mrs. Evy as a English teacher in SDN Sumbersari 2 Jember, there are some feedback we had to give more attention. Actually, she told us that the video is good but we need to revise some section in the video because there were some mistyping words. Then, she asked us to add more song. We did not agree because it can make the quality of the video is not clear. For the last , suggestion for the English teacher to use another form of learning media in teaching learning English in the school, so it can make the students more interest and active in the class. For the students of English Study Program who want to design this kind of teaching video, they can use this teaching video as their references. So, we do hope that this product useful for students in SDN Sumbersari 2 Jember.
