Abstract

SUMMARY English Learning Media Website for the First Grade Students of SMPN 1 Tanggul. Anggraini Vesty Maulinda. F3111193. Diah Fatmawati. F3111283. Rela Amalia. F3111020. Yulia Nawang Wulan. F3111012. 31 Pages. Language, Communication and Tourism Department. State Polytechnic of Jember. English is a compulsory subject for junior high school as stated in the 2013 curriculum. Based on the anecdotal experiences from Junior High School’ students, teaching English in Junior High School is using traditional strategy so called teacher centered. the teachers usually only stand up in front of the class then transferring the materials to the students orally. Mostly, the students are reluctant to ask the question to their teacher if they got difficulties about the material that have been given by the teacher. Unfortunately there was no adequate media to support the students learning English. The school which also suffers from those kinds of condition is SMPN 1 Tanggul. Every grades students in SMPN 1 Tanggul has already got English for the regular subject. teaching learning process in this school was not different with the most strategy used in other school in Jember centre. Seeing this condition, we offered additional media in learning English inside and outside of class room. That is English learning web. This product would be an additional media for the students of SMP 1 Tanggul in learning English. This product also could help the teacher to transfer the material to the students. By doing the final project, we could apply English ability especially in structure, reading, instructional Design and Media, and computer. Besides, this report could be reference for students who conduct the same product. In conducting this final project, we used steps in designing the learning website by Christopher Heng (2006-2013). The steps were getting the domain name, collecting and eliminating the material for the website, designing the web pages, adding materials to the website, choosing a web host and signing up for an account, testing the website and maintaining. Besides, we used Macromedia Flash to do this activity because it makes the display of the website more interesting. We conducted interview, observation and browsing in designing this final project. We have done interviewed the principals and teachers of SMPN 1 Tanggul on 27th April 2013. We gave questions about student`s feeling about learning English and English materials in SMPN 1 Tanggul. They said that this project was needed. We also got some books from SMPN 1 Tanggul English’s teacher to support this project. Afterward, we did an observation to the students of SMPN 1 Tanggul when we were visiting that school. We said to the students of SMPN 1 Tanggul about our project. They were really happy and support our product. In designing this final project, we also searched some articles about materials of Junior High School lesson especially in English subject. The result of our final project is English learning media website. The contents of this product are grammar, reading text and exercises, learning videos, music and games. In grammar section there are four tenses that contain of simple past tense, simple present tense, and present continuous tense and simple future tense. Each tense are completed by patterns and examples using Bahasa Indonesia to make the students more understand. In exercise section we made the reading text was arranged by the sentences using the grammar that has been explained in grammar patterns. We also completed with exercises that in each reading text contains about five to ten questions. The type of the exercises is multiple choices. The next was videos. In this section, there are nine learning videos about simple past tense, present tense, simple past tense, and simple future tense. In music section, there are several song completed by lyrics and meanings of lyric. Besides, the students could get the score automatically after they completed the missing lyrics. The last is game section. There are five games that could be used by the students. This final project is really interesting and easy to be used. We also got some evaluation and problems during conducted this final project. There were from first and second supervisors, the teachers and students of SMPN 1 Tanggul. Mrs. Nanik Mariyati is our first supervisor, gave comment about the menu button’s language in our learning website that should be changed into English language. The other comment that the supervisor gave was to change the previous learning video that we have prepared to be the new one. It was because, the previous learning video contents did not appropriate with the students need. Finally, we tried to find the new videos that appropriate with the students of SMPN 1 Tanggul. Besides, our second supervisor also gave evaluation in grammar of our report. She gave us the comment to be more focus in writing the report. The teachers of SMPN 1 Tanggul did not give the complaint to our product. They just asked how to operate this website. After we explained how to operate the website clearly, we gave them chance to try to operate this website. The last was the students of SMPN 1 Tanggul evaluation. They very interested in seeing our product. They said that learning videos and music were the most interesting section. Afterward, they read the exercises and they said, there were easy and difficult exercise but all the exercises were appropriate with the material and can give alternative media for student’s English comprehension. Making the English learning media website is quite difficult. We have to prepare many kinds of thing such as the materials, the videos, the exercises and the website itself. Besides, in designing English learning media website, we should have skill related to several software such as Macromedia Flash, Adobe Dreamweaver cs3, Notepad++, Coreldraw12 and Photoshop. Afterward, we should have good English skills to provide a good learning media to help the students of SMPN 1 Tanggul in improving their English ability. We realize that this product is not perfect yet, but we do hope this learning website will be useful for students of SMPN 1 Tanggul. The students of SMPN 1 Tanggul should not only learn English through this web but also trough the other media such as book, magazine, newspaper and etc. Moreover, in providing an additional media, this learning website will help the English teacher of SMPN 1. They hope the student will get the new interesting experience in learning English. The last, for the Students of State Polytechnic of Jember, especially for the English Study Program who want to conduct the same project, should prepare all appropriate materials, computer and English skill to make the better than this final project.
