Abstract

Damage to the machine or structure starts from a location that has a stress concentration. The emergence of stress concentrations can be caused by holes, surface roughness, material defects, porosity, inclusions, more local heating at machining, decarburation and so on. Rotary testing is important in order to predict the strength of twisting fatigue of a shaft, to minimize the occurrence of material failure on the shaft. The testing process is giving the twisting load on the shaft until the shaft is cut off. The purpose of this study is to analyze the strength of the ST-41 steel twisting using a rotary test tool. This type of research uses experimental research. The object of this study is the strength of steel twisting ST-41. The results of the study obtained by researchers related to the strength of the ST-41 steel twisting are shaft failure starting from the beginning of the crack and creeping vertically to make large cracks, these cracks are caused by the moment of twisting that occurs. The crack will continue to spread until it breaks completely, the fault tends to lead to a small diameter. Specimens made with notches will fracture more quickly. The torsional strength of a material is indicated by its shear stress value. The results of the calculation of the data obtained value of twisting strength of notched specimens using standard test equipment amounted to 14.66 MPa and using the design test results was 15.92 MPa, whereas for specimens without notches using standard test equipment was 33.73 MPa and using the design test results is 35.42 MPa. The maximum maximum twist angle of the specimen without a notch is 110 in the third round in the standard test equipment and 360 in the third round in the design test, it can be concluded that the material has ductile properties.
