Abstract

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L) has a high content of antioxidants are flavonoids. The content of flavonoids contained in cocoa beans can protect pancreatic beta cells from damage caused by free radicals. Previous research stated that cocoa powder can normalize fasting blood glucose levels which is caused by antioxidant content (flavonoids) in cocoa powder. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of chocolate drinks on fasting blood glucose levels in white rats (Rattus norvegicus L.) type 2 diabetes mellitus wistar strain. This type of research is an experimental research (True experimental). The research design is the design (pretest-posttest control group design). The sample used is a white male rats aged 2-3 months and weighing 180-200 g, high-fat diet induced HFD (High Fat Diet) 50 days and STZ low dose 30 mg / dl, and given a dose of chocolate drinks 3.15 ml / day (4 g chocolate powder), 3.25 ml / day (5 g chocolate powder ) and 3.29 ml / day (5.4 g of cocoa powder) for 21 days. Fasting blood glucose levels checked by GOD-PAP method. Data were analyzed by Anova, continued test pretest and posttest. There are differences in fasting blood glucose levels before and after treatment in treatment group 1 at a dose of 3,15 ml chocolate drink / day (4 g chocolate powder / day) with a decrease in fasting blood glucose levels by 25,8%. Giving chocolate has potential in lowering fasting blood glucose levels
