Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition where cholesterol in the blood increases beyond the normal threshold and is characterized by elevated levels of LDL cholesterol. The combination of star fruit juice and red guava is one of the efforts to reduce LDL cholesterol levels. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of giving a combination of star fruit juice and red guava on LDL cholesterol levels of rats of the Wistar hypercholesterolemia strain. This type of research is true-experimental with pretest-posttest with control group design. This study used 18 male Wistar rats aged 3-4 months with a weight of 100-300 grams. The mice were divided into 3 groups, namely the group (K-) given rat bio standard feed, the group (K+) given rat bio standard feed, high cholesterol feed of cattle brain and PTU of 0.1% as drinking water, and group (P) was given standard rat bio feed, a high-cholesterol feed of cattle brain, PTU of 0.1% as drinking water and a combination intervention of star fruit juice and red guava given as much as 7.2 ml/head/day. The results showed that there were differences in LDL cholesterol levels before the intervention (p=0.001), there were differences in LDL cholesterol levels between groups after the intervention (p=0.000). There were differences in LDL pretest and posttest cholesterol levels in the (K-) group (p=0.014) and in the group (K+) (p=0.011). There was no difference in LDL pretest and posttest cholesterol levels in group P (p=0.624). There was a difference in LDL cholesterol levels before and after the intervention (p=0.025). The conclusion of this study is that there is no effect of giving a combination of star fruit juice and red guava on LDL cholesterol levels of white rats of the Wistar strain hypercholesterolemia.
