Abstract

This is the report of the final project entitled “Translating an E-Book Entitled Operating System Concepts Ninth Edition (Chapter 10, Page 467- 502)”. The goal of this final project was to help the readers understand the contents of the e-book. According to the writer's preliminary studies, several students in the IT Department struggled to understand the content in the e-book. Therefore, the writer translated the e-book from English into Bahasa Indonesia as her final project. To finish this final project, the writer adopted the translation process stated by Nida and Taber (1982) that consist of three phases such as analysis, transferring, and restructuring. In analysis process, the writer read the source text and then analyzed the grammatical relationship and the meaning of some difficult words. To find the definitions of some words, the writer needed to check some dictionaries and read some articles to have better understanding. In transferring process, the writer tried to translate the text by guessing the meaning form SL into the TL. Last, in the restructuring process, the writer wrote the draft of translation and asked 2 proofreaders to proofread the draft structurally and linguistically and the supervisor helped her in doing general and final review. In making the product of translation, the writer had some difficulties. There were some words that cannot be translated into the target language because it is a lexicon that only have definition. In this condition, the writer tried to find the definition of the words and phrases and also the equivalent word in bahasa Indonesia in Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia. The writer also read e-journals and articles about IT to help her find the definition and appropriate words or phrases in bahasa Indonesia. By completing this final project, the writer applied theix knowledge she learned before and gain more knowledge in a different field such as Information Technology field. Finally, the writer finished translating the e-book entitled “Operating System Concepts Ninth Edition (Chapter 10, Page 467-502)” from English into bahasa Indonesia. After all of the processes were completed, the writer exported the product in the form of Microsoft Word into PDF format and printed them. The printed version was submitted to the IT Department and electronic file was submitted to the English Study Program as well as the IT Department.
