Abstract

This study presents a web-based adaptive learning application that integrates real-time facial emotion recognition to personalise question difficulty for primary school students aged 7–9. Using a CNN trained on the FER2013 dataset, the system classifies student expressions into four categories and automatically adjusts task difficulty per emotion group at the end of each round. Teachers are supported through a live monitoring dashboard, action suggestions, and exportable session reports. Developed using Adaptive Software Development and Design-Based Research, the system demonstrates a practical approach to closing the loop between emotion detection and instructional response in primary classroom settings.
