Abstract

The purpose of this final project is to translate the zine titled ‘Djember Tempo Doeloe’ on pages 1-10 by R.Z. Hakim, published by the Yayasan Studi Sudut Arsip Kalisat. The zine contains various information regarding the history of Jember, including the origins of the Bedadung River, the 1927 flood tragedy, the development of Jember’s city planning during the colonial era, as well as the important roles of several key figures in Jember’s development during that period. Additionally, the project aims to produce an accurate translation an international audience. This project serves as a platform to apply and practice translation skills from Indonesian to English on texts containing elements of local history and culture. In the translation process, the author applied Nida and Taber’s (1982) translation theory, which consists of Analysis, Transfer, and Restructuring. During this process, the author encountered various challenges, such as the difficulty of translating several words into English. The author used translation, such as DeepL Translation, as a tool to generate an early translation and find the right vocabulary, as well as SDL Trados Studio as a tool for editing and maintaining consistency in the translation, Grammarly and Quillbot for checking grammatical error. Furthermore, the author also used KBBI (Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia) and the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary as online dictionaries to find the correct meanings. After that, the translation was reviewed by a proofreader to ensure the final quality of the translation is accurate, understandable by the target audience, and consistent with proper English language conventions. In this way, this translation project serves not only as a means to develop the author’s translation skills from Indonesian to English through texts on local history and is also expected to serve as a means to share information about the local history and culture of Jember with a wider audience, especially international readers interested in history and culture. Through the publication, it is also hoped that appreciation and awareness of local cultural heritage as part of the nation’s cultural identity will be increased.
