Abstract

This final project focused on translating a zine entitled Merokat Kenangan for Yayasan Studi Arsip Sudut Kalisat from Indonesian to English. Before this project, the zine was only available in Indonesian, limiting access for foreigner visitors interested in Indonesia's local history and cultural heritage. Therefore, this project aimed to produce an English translation that preserves the original meaning, cultural values, and narrative style while making the content accessible to a wider audience. The translation followed Nida and Taber’s (1982) three-stage model: analysis, transfer, and restructuring. The writer first analyzed the source text and clarified unfamiliar cultural terms with the zine’s author, then transferred the meaning into English while considering historical and cultural contexts, and finally revised the translation to produce natural and accurate English. SDL Trados and Machine Translation tools supported consistency and comprehension, while a professional proofreader reviewed the final version. The writer applied various translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002), including borrowing, adaptation, amplification, modulation, transposition, and reduction, ensuring that culturally specific terms remained understandable for international readers. The final product consists of an English version of Merokat Kenangan in both printed and digital (PDF) formats. The translated zine has been archived at Yayasan Studi Arsip Sudut Kalisat and serves as a valuable resource for foreign visitors, researchers, and students seeking to learn about Jember's local history and cultural traditions.
