Abstract

English is widely recognized as a global language used in international communication, but not everyone has mastered it, while historical records play a crucial role in preserving past events, cultural developments, and social contexts, yet when they are only available in one language their accessibility remains limited, creating a gap in historical awareness and making many regional narratives less known. In Indonesia, many historical records are difficult to access, including the history of Jember, which has an important background during the colonial period, and the translation of the zine Djember Tempo Doeloe aims to make local history accessible to a global audience while preserving cultural heritage. History is a narrative that contains past events and serves as a process of interaction between the present and the past, helping people understand how historical events influence current conditions, while Jember itself has a diverse historical background influenced by geography, culture, and colonial development. A zine is a self-published work that provides cultural insights and perspectives, and translation is the process of transferring meaning from a source language into a target language without changing the message. The translation process involves stages such as analysis, message transfer, and restructuring, while various techniques and strategies are used to handle linguistic and cultural differences. The project translated the zine Djember Tempo Doeloe pages 10–17 from Indonesian into English within a structured process, using tools such as machine translation, CAT tools, artificial intelligence, and online dictionaries to improve accuracy and consistency. Several translation techniques such as adaptation, borrowing, amplification, literal translation, and modulation, were applied to ensure clarity and cultural relevance, while the process followed stages of analyzing the source text, transferring meaning into a draft, and refining the translation into a clear and natural English text. The results show that the translation process successfully conveyed the historical narrative of Jember while maintaining accuracy, readability, and cultural meaning, although challenges were found in translating cultural expressions, mixed language styles, and non-chronological narratives. The project contributes to making Jember’s history accessible to international readers, improves translation skills and cultural understanding, and demonstrates that combining appropriate techniques, tools, and proofreading can produce a clear, accurate, and academically appropriate translation.
