Abstract

Translating An E-book Entitled “Seeds Physiology Of Development, Germination, And Dormancy” Third Edition on (Chapter 4, Page 133 – 181), Indah Sulistyowati, NIM F31172210, tahun 2021, 29 pages., Language, Communication, and Tourism Department, Politeknik Negeri Jember, Adriadi Novawan, S.Pd., M.Ed. (Supervisor). Nowadays, many students practice their studies using an e-book written in English. Using an e-book written in English is a problem because the language barrier but the translation helping them. Translation is an essential activity of converting one language that has called Source Language (SL) to another language as the Target language (TL). The process of translating needs English basic skill. The students, who do not have good English skill ability, will find the difficulties to understand the information that still written in English. On the other hand, the e-book that has rich information will not be easy to grasp because students do not master the language. There is one aspect in language which is called vocabulary. The student failed to understand the vocabulary because they are not familiar with the words, so that it will lead to a distorted meaning. So, the translated book is highly required in education environment. In education environment, the translated book can give benefit for student. Based on the preliminary study that the writer did, the lecturer explained that the e-book is very important because as the basic material in the teaching and learning in Agriculture Production Department. While, most students are difficult to gain the information from the reference books in English version, also had difficulty to catch the main point from the meaning of the e-book because sometimes they found the scientific terms that were difficult to translate. To perform this translation project the writer needs to determine the process of Translation that the writer will be used. The writer used the translation process proposed by Nida and Taber (1974) which consists of three phases, namely analysis, transferring, and restructuring and the writer also used some of the translation procedures proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (2000) in Hatim and Munday (2001), namely, Borrowing, Calque, Literal, and transposition, procedure. By conducting this final project which is about translation, the writer faced difficulties because the writer is lacking of grammar knowledge and English vocabularies especially in the field of Agriculture Production Department terms. On the other hand, the translation product was made in the form of Microsoft Word and PDF format, and will be available in the form of hardcopy and softcopy. The file of the result is given to the lecturer of Agriculture Production Department to support the teaching and learning classes.
