Abstract
Generally, there were a lot of language that used in around us. Such as, Chinese, Spain, English, Arabian, and Hindi. Today, English has a unique position in the world which is English as a new lingua franca and it has become a global language. It means that, English is a new communication tool that used by a lot of people all around the world, so English should be mastered by many people. But in fact, there is a problem in mastering English as a global language. In the tourism object, people find the description of that place that still written in English, so people cannot catch the information in the description. Based on the problem, translation is needed to help people understand about the information. In Indonesia, one of educational institution that uses references for learning media that still written or published in English is in Information Technology Department. In IT Department used an e-book in English entitled “Operating System Concepts, Ninth Edition” as learning media to support the learning process. The lecturer of IT Department used this English e-book. Some part of this e-book are translated, because some senior student of English Study Program are translated it, but in some part not translated yet. The key to solve this problem was translated the text into Indonesia. Based on the demand from Mr. Ery as the lecturer in IT Department, this final project aimed to translated an e-book entitled Operating System Concepts, Ninth Edition. This project finished by teamwork of six persons, so that the writer only focused on page 219 until 231. The result of this final project would help the students and lecturer of IT Department to understand this e-book easily and it ix would be useful for their teaching learning whether practicum class or theory class. To finish this project the writer used the translation process by Banjar (2009) such as, analysis the source text, transfer the text into target language, and revision. The writer also applied some procedure of translation by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995). Those are literal, borrowing, transposition, and adaptation. In this e-book were talking about classic problem of synchronization and monitors. In classic problem of synchronization were talking about the bounded buffer problem, the readers writers problem, and the dining philosopher problem. While, in the monitors were explained about monitor usage, dining philosopher solution using monitors, implementing a monitor using semaphores, and resuming process within a monitor. As the result, the writer got knowledge in translated the e-book, the writer could apply her reading, writing, and translation skill to finish this final project. The writer also hopes that the result of translation gave benefit to the IT Department who used this product. Furthermore, by finished this final project the writer have several suggestion for the students and lecturer of IT Department, for the students of English study program, and for English Study Program. For the students and lecturer of IT Department, they can used the result of this final project in their learning teaching process. For the students of English study program, this final project could be a reference and should have to increase their reading and writing skill if they want to make the translation project. For English Study Program, provide many references such as book, journals, and articles for the student of English study program in the reading corner, while for the lecture in translation class should give clear explanation about the translation project.
