Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of electrode movement patterns and welding current variations on the tensile strength and macrostructure of low carbon steel ST 37 welded using the SMAW method, with water as the cooling medium. The electrode movement patterns applied were triangular, zig-zag, and spiral, each at 70A and 80A current levels. The experiments involved tensile testing to measure mechanical strength and macrostructure analysis to observe the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) and welding defects. Results showed that the triangular pattern at 80A produced the highest tensile strength and elongation, while the zig-zag pattern at 80A resulted in the widest HAZ. Water cooling effectively reduced the HAZ area and minimized weld defects. Therefore, selecting the appropriate welding parameters is essential to improve weld joint quality.
