Abstract
Corn (Zea mays L.) is the second most important food commodity after rice in Indonesia, therefore the availability of high-quality seeds is a critical factor in increasing productivity. Limited access and economic factors often force farmers to use expired corn seeds, which typically experience a decline in vigor, affecting germination rate, early growth, and crop yield. The use of natural growth regulators (ZPT) such as red onion extract and young coconut water has the potential to be an environmentally friendly solution for restoring seed vigour. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of combining red onion extract and young coconut water in enhancing the vigour of expired corn seeds. The study was conducted at the Seed Technology Laboratory of Jember State Polytechnic from July to August 2025. The method used was a Complete Randomised Design (CRD) Factorial with two treatment factors. The first factor is the concentration of red onion extract (B), which consists of four levels: control (B0), 15% (B1), 35% (B2), and 60% (B3). The second factor is the concentration of young coconut water (K), which consists of four levels: control (K0), 25% (K1), 60% (K2), and 75% (K3). There are 16 treatment combinations, each repeated three times. The data were analysed using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) and followed by the DMRT (Duncan Multiple Range Test) at the 5% level. The results showed that the interaction between the red onion extract concentration and young coconut water concentration had a significant effect on the germination rate (89.00%) and vigor index (88%), with the best treatment being B2K3 (35% red onion extract concentration and 75% young coconut water concentration). Key Words: Coconut Water, Red Onion, Expired Seeds, Corn, Seed Vigor
