Abstract

Translating a Zine Entitled “Djember Tempo Doeloe” on Page 17 to 24 for Yayasan Studi Arsip Sudut Kalisat, Siti Aminatus Suhro, F31222701, 2025, 41 Pages, English Study Program, Politeknik Negeri Jember, Gullit Tornado Taufan, S.Pd., M.Pd. (Supervisor) History plays a vital role in human life by providing a chronological record of events that shape the identity and culture of a community. Understanding history not only means remembering the past but also provides broad insights into the development of traditions, values, and social changes that form today’s society. However, in Indonesia, the challenge in understanding history lies not only in a lack of interest but also in the diversity of historical narratives based on oral traditions and local perspectives. This creates a gap in the delivery of history, especially when it needs to be introduced to a global audience. In this context, translating historical texts becomes crucial as a bridge to introduce local historical richness to the international world. Jember is one of the cities in Indonesia that holds rich historical traces, from the kingdom era to the colonial period. Unfortunately, most of these local historical records are only available in the Indonesian language, making it difficult for international readers to understand the context and cultural values contained within. This project aimed to produce a translation that is not only linguistically accurate but also culturally relevant and easily understandable for international readers. This translation is expected to be used by researchers, academics, translators, and the general public, especially international audiences interested in Jember’s local history. The writer used Nida and Taber’s (1982) translation theory approach, which consists of three main stages: analysis, transfer, and restructuring. During the translation process, the writer faced various challenges, such as local idioms in Javanese and Madurese that cannot be translated literally. To overcome this, the writer used various translation techniques developed by Molina and Albir (2002), such as borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, adaptation, and compensation. The writer also utilized modern translation technology like DeepL Translator and Microsoft Bing Translator as initial aids, as well as SDL Trados Studio for editing and term consistency. Additionally, the author used online dictionaries like Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI) and Oxford Learner’s Dictionary to ensure the accuracy of meaning in historical and cultural contexts. The translation is then reviewed by a proofreader to ensure the final quality in terms of grammar, fluency, and readability. The result of this project was an English translation of the zine “Djember Tempo Doeloe” pages 17 to 24, which not only provided the historical information but also conveys the emotional and reflective nuance of the original narrative. The zine was printed and archived by Yayasan Studi Arsip Sudut Kalisat. Thus, the result of this project contributed significantly to introducing Jember's history to the world and promoting cross-cultural knowledge exchange. This final project is expected to be an example for other students to take up local texts as translation objects and encourage educational institutions to support projects based on local cultural preservation. Furthermore, it is hoped that Yayasan Studi Arsip Sudut Kalisat will continue similar initiatives so that Jember's historical heritage is increasingly recognized and appreciated globally.
