Abstract

Corrosion is a problem that often occurs in a metal because metal is used for the material of a tool, especially tools used in industry. One type of metal used is steel plate cold coil (SPCC) steel. One way to inhibit the occurrence of the corrosion process by coating the electroplating method. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in current and electroplating time on the corrosion rate of SPCC steel with nickel coatings. The research method used is experimental, by taking the object of research on the corrosion rate value of SPCC low carbon steel material using acid solution test media. The results obtained from the research and observation process are the smallest variation in the corrosion rate value found in the variation of 3 ampere current and 10 minutes coating time with a weight loss of 0.10 grams with a corrosion rate value of 0.1606 mm/y. While the largest corrosion rate value is in the voltage variation of 3A and a coating time of 20 minutes with a loss of 0.37 grams of specimen weight with a corrosion rate value of 0.6426 mm/y. With this, the higher the current and the longer the time of the nickel electroplating process is not necessarily a good corrosion inhibitor, although the mass of the coating has the largest value, it must be required to spread the nickel layer evenly.
