Abstract
Composite is a combination of two or more different materials into a microscopic form, which is made of various combinations or combinations of fibers and matrix. This study aims to determine the process of making composites from polyester resin reinforced with carbon fiber and to determine the effect of the strength of composites made from carbon fibers of different types of fibers by testing the characteristics of mechanical properties of choice. In this research using woven carbon fiber and forged carbon fiber with a polyester matrix and mechanical testing was carried out to determine the results of the strength and shock load toughness of the composite material. In the fiber mixture, there are four variations in the percentage of the mixture including 55% volume fraction of woven carbon fiber as a comparison of 45%, 55% and 65% to find out the best variation of forged carbon fiber. The method of making specimens using the hand lay-up method. The results of the tensile test show that the lowest value is found in forged carbon fiber with a volume fraction of 45%, the highest tensile strength value that exceeds the value of woven carbon is found in forged carbon fiber with a volume fraction of 65% with an average value of 228.56 N/mm2. The results of the impact test for the 65% composite variation had the lowest impact toughness, the best composite variation was found in the 45% volume fraction composite with an average HI value of 0.1927 J/mm2.
