Abstract

The remainder of the combustion of fuel in the combustion motor produces exhaust gas which theoretically contains elements of CO, NO2, HC, C, H2, CO2, H2O and N2. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the addition of an adsorbent made from coffee waste activated charcoal on the exhaust emissions of gasoline-fueled motor vehicles to obtain the lowest levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydro carbon (HC) exhaust emissions. This research uses physical activation, which will be activated at 700 ℃, 800 ℃, and 900 ℃. Tests were carried out at engine speed of 2000 rpm, 3000 rpm and 4000 rpm. The results showed that the most optimal reduction in CO emission levels was when using coffee dregs activated charcoal adsorbent with an activation temperature of 900 ℃, the decrease was 97.96% compared to CO emissions in standard exhaust, namely from 3.93% vol. to 0.08% vol. Whereas for the optimal reduction of HC emissions when using activated charcoal adsorbent without a TiO2 catalyst, the reduction obtained reached 97.75% compared to standard exhaust, from 9522 ppm to 214 ppm.
